Background of the study
Viral hashtags on Twitter have emerged as powerful agents of morphological innovation in Nigerian digital discourse. These hashtags not only serve to categorize content but also spur the creation of novel word forms through processes such as clipping, blending, and affixation (Akinyele, 2023). Nigerian users harness these digital tools to express complex ideas succinctly, resulting in innovative expressions that often deviate from standard morphology. Viral hashtag movements, particularly those tied to social and political issues, rapidly disseminate these new forms, influencing everyday language and creating a dynamic digital lexicon. This study investigates the morphological processes underlying hashtag-driven neologisms by comparing different Twitter movements. It examines how viral trends lead to systematic changes in word formation and assess the cultural and technological factors that facilitate these innovations (Ibrahim, 2024). The research aims to document the lifecycle of these morphological innovations and their broader implications for language evolution in Nigeria.
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized impact of viral hashtags on word formation, systematic research on their role in driving morphological innovation in Nigeria is limited. Existing studies tend to focus on the social or political impact of hashtags without delving into the linguistic mechanisms involved. This gap restricts our understanding of how digital activism and viral trends lead to new morphological forms. The study seeks to address this deficiency by comparing morphological innovations across different Twitter hashtag movements, thereby elucidating the processes and impacts of digital lexical change (Chukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed examination of how viral hashtags drive morphological innovation in Nigerian digital discourse. The findings will contribute to linguistic theory and digital communication research, offering insights into the mechanisms of lexical change and their cultural implications (Akinyele, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to Twitter and focuses on hashtag-driven morphological innovation in Nigerian digital discourse, excluding other platforms and offline language.
